Irish midfielder rejects new deal at Yeovil to move to another League Two club

Kevin Dawson had been at Yeovil since moving from Shelbourne in 2013.

IRISH MIDFIELDER KEVIN Dawson has turned down a new contract offer from Yeovil Town to sign a two-year deal with fellow League Two outfit Cheltenham Town.

The 26-year-old Dubliner had been at Yeovil for five seasons after moving over from Shelbourne in 2013 but will now head north to link up with manager Gary Johnson again.

Johnson, the former Yeovil boss, brought Dawson over from Ireland after he had caught the eye in the League of Ireland with Sporting Fingal and then Shels.

In his first season at Huish Park, Dawson played a key role in Yeovil’s promotion to the Championship via the play-offs and made 141 appearances in total for the club, scoring nine goals.

“I’m really pleased to be signing Kevin Dawson as our first new summer addition,” Cheltenham manager Johnson said.

“He epitomises everything I want in a player and I know he will become a fans’ favourite with his commitment and enthusiasm for the game, along with a work rate that is second to none.

“We had success together at Yeovil and he had offers from a few different teams so I’m glad that I’ve convinced him to join us. He gives us options as he can play in a few different positions.”

Dawson’s move comes a day after his brother, Stephen, put pen to paper on a three=year deal with Bury.

The 31-year-old joins the Gigg Lane club for a second spell after leaving for Leyton Orient at the end of the 2009/10 season. He has since had stints with Barnsley, Rochdale and, most recently, Scunthorpe.
