LAR CORBETT WAS sent-off as reigning Munster senior club hurling champions Thurles Sarsfields exited this year’s Tipperary SHC in dramatic fashion last night.
Corbett was shown a red card in the early stages of the game in the Ragg after a melee as Thurles Sarsfields were defeated by Eire Og Nenagh by 0-15 to 0-12 in the first round of the Tipperary SHC.
Eire Og Nenagh player Billy Heffernan was also sent-off during the incident in a game that saw Thurles Sarsfields exit the 2013 title race and prepare to face a relegation battle to preserve their senior status.
The Tipperary senior quartet of Michael Cahill, Padraic Maher, Corbett and Pa Bourke were all in action for Thurles Sarsfields but suffered further disappointment just a week after losing the Munster senior semi-final against Limerick.
Thurles Sarsfields claimed last year’s Munster senior hurling crown with a final victory over Waterford’s De La Salle in November and subsequently lost out against Offaly’s Kilcormac-Killoughey in the All-Ireland club semi-final in February.
But their hopes of embarking again on the provincial and All-Ireland club trail were dashed after last night’s defeat.
Elsewhere Tipperary senior attacker Eoin Kelly was also sent-off over the weekend when he was in action for Mullinahone in the south divisional semi-final as he was shown a second yellow card in their 0-12 to 0-11 loss to Killenaule.
