League of Ireland clubs agree structure for next season

Club chiefs thrashed out plans for next season at a meeting last night.

LEAGUE OF IRELAND sides will play each other three times each next year.

The structure was agreed at a meeting of club representatives last night.

The clubs have rejected plans to split the top division into two tiers at the end of the campaign however.

The league will take a mid-season break in June, which coincides generally with Ireland’s Euro 2012 campaign.

One club will be relegated automatically from the Premier Division. The second placed club plays the third placed club in a First Division play-off, meanwhile, with the winners then facing  the 11th-placed Premier Division side.

The season will commence on Friday, 2 March and finish on the weekend of 28 October.
