Hospital treatment for foot injury ruled Keegan out for Mayo today

The 2016 Footballer of the Year was a late withdrawal.

A FOOT INJURY, which required hospital treatment last week in Castlebar, was the reason why Lee Keegan did not feature in Mayo’s landslide win over Roscommon at Croke Park today.

Keegan was man-of-the-match in the drawn game as he scored 1-3 from play but it was announced before throw-in at today’s quarter-final replay that the Westport man would be replaced by Tom Parsons.

While Keegan did partake in the warm-up beforehand, he was not pressed into action during the game.

But it was a precaution taken by manager Stephen Rochford and the 2016 Footballer of the Year will be available for selection for the All-Ireland semi-final against Kerry on Sunday 20 August.

“Obviously it was a bit documented about Lee having spent some time in hospital this week,” stated Rochford.

“It was just his foot, it just ballooned up on Monday night. He would have been available if needed going into the final 20 or 25 minutes.

“To be honest as (regards being) 100%, he’d be available probably tomorrow, definitely Wednesday. He’d made a really, really good recovery.

“It’s an opportunity just to acknowledge our own medical team and the medical team in Mayo General (Hospital) for the good work they did with him.

“We just felt the way that Roscommon (were) on the ball, we needed to put more pace into the game and that’s what Tom (Parsons) and Donal (Vaughan) afforded us.

“They were really good around the middle third. Possession is nine-tenths of the law. I thought we did really well there in getting our hands on the ball.

“Certainly (we) didn’t turn it over half as many times as we did last week. That would have lead to a lot of frustration in the camp last week.

“That’s a job done for today but far from anything more than that. We just played with a more consistent tempo.

“We stopped operating in spurts and taking our foot off the throttle.

“We just sort of played a little bit more on the line and looked just for the next score and allowed the scoreboard build.”
