BLACKBURN FANS WILL surely be wondering what might have been after Robert Lewandowski’s four-goal performance in the Champions League semi-final tonight.
Back in April 2010, the Polish striker was a highly-rated 22-year-old youngster playing for Lech Poznan.
In fact, he was so impressive that Blackburn put in a €5million bid for the player.
And the player was due to fly over to speak with Blackburn, however fate, in the form of a volcanic ash cloud, intervened, and his flight was cancelled.
“He got the invitation [from Blackburn], but due to the cancellation of the flights he could not go, and it makes no sense to drive,” Lewandowski’s agent Cezary Kucharski told reporters at the time.
Borussia Dortmund were also rumoured to be interested at the time, and after the Blackburn bid fell through, the German club eventually confirmed the signing the following June.
Would Dortmund be in the Champions League semi-final right now if it weren’t for the volcanic ash cloud?
And perhaps even more pertinently, would Blackburn be struggling in the Championship?
