Inspired by the Argentine superstar, in addition to two goals from Luis Suarez and one from Gerard Pique, the Catalan club went one point clear at the top of the table.

Messi’s first goal brought him to 340 goals in 340 games with Barca, while he then notched two more, while Rayo subsequently scored a consolation from the penalty spot.

The 27-year-old also now has the most hat-tricks in the history of Spanish football.
