Politicians show their World Cup support on social media

German Chancellor Angela Merkel poses with Lukas Podolski after Germany victory.

FOLLOWING GERMANY’S EMPHATIC World Cup win over Portugal in their Group G opener, Lukas Podolski knew who he wanted to celebrate with. The leader of his country, Angela Merkel.

The Arsenal attacker cuddled up for a ‘selfie’ though Angela, clearly unfamiliar with them, seemed to have difficulty in knowing where to look. We’ve all been there, Angie.

The German Chancellor popped into the dressing room after the game and met the entire squad. Inevitably, she posed for a photo with the entire group and, inevitably, that was posted to social media too. Apparently, she had forthright views on how Jogi Löw can solve the Ozil conundrum.

Meanwhile, in the US, former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright also took to Twitter to get behind her country.

Jurgen Klismann’s side take on Ghana in the second Group G game later tonight.
