Uruguayan defender suspended by Juventus after drink-drive Ferrari smash

Martin Caceres was fortunate to escape without serious injury.

JUVENTUS HAVE SUSPENDED defender Martin Caceres after he was involved in a drink-drive incident on Monday night.

The Uruguay international escaped unhurt after crashing his car in Turin, with tests showing he was over the alcohol limit for driving.

Caceres lost control of his Ferrari just after midnight and struck a traffic island before careering into a bus stop and two parked cars. The 28-year-old’s vehicle was badly damaged in the collision but Caceres did not sustain any injuries.

However, the former Sevilla man was found to be slightly over the limit and was consequently fined €1,000, while his car has been impounded for 180 days.

In a statement released on Tuesday afternoon, the Serie A club announced Caceres was suspended from the first team temporarily.

“The conduct of Martin Caceres on the night of 28 September represents gross violation of his responsibilities as a Juventus player, as well as damaging the image of the club,” it read.

“Juventus will thus taken disciplinary action against the player in the form of a fine and his temporary suspension from the first team.”

This was not Caceres’ first road-traffic accident, with the defender having crashed into the entrance of a metro station in Turin in 2013 and collided with two cars in his native Montevideo last year.

Caceres had already been ruled out of Juve’s Champions League meeting with Sevilla on Wednesday through injury.
