Martin O'Neill's first game back in management ends in defeat

The Derry native, a former Forest player, could not inspire a win on his return today, as the hosts were beaten 1-0 by Bristol City.

EX-IRELAND MANAGER Martin O’Neill’s return to management has got off to a disappointing start.

Having departed the Irish role last November, O’Neill was recently appointed as the new manager of Championship side Nottingham Forest.

The Derry native, a former Forest player, could not inspire a win on his return today, as the hosts were beaten 1-0 by Bristol City in the Championship.

O’Neill won the European Cup as a Forest star under celebrated manager Brian Clough and received a fine ovation from home fans at the East Midlands club’s City Ground on Saturday.

But the 66-year-old coach, whose own extensive managerial career has included spells in charge of Leicester, Celtic and Aston Villa, saw Forest lose after Bristol City’s Famara Diedhiou scored midway through the second half.
