McDowell 2 shots off the lead in California

The Northern Irishman is joint second behind Nick Watney, along with Keegan Bradley and Jim Furyk.

GRAEME McDOWELL IS just two shots behind leader Nick Watney after the opening round of the World Challenge in California.

Watney’s 67 was the best of the strong 18-man field, with the American shooting four birdies after the turn at the Thousand Oaks course in California.

McDowell signed for 69 along with Keegan Bradley and Jim Furyk.

Tiger Woods had an inconsistent first day and stands a further shot back on two-under, along with Bo Van Pelt and Webb Simpson.

Aside from McDowell, the only non-Americans in the field are Australian Jason Day and Ian Poulter from England.

Day shares eighth place on one-under, while Poulter is tied for 11th after he carded a 73.
