EUROPE’S 2012 RYDER Cup vice-captain Paul McGinley says he will not actively lobby for the full captaincy in 2014.
The Irishman is hot favourite to succeed Jose Maria Olazabal, who captained the Europeans to an astonishing comeback win over the Americans at the Medinah Country Club.
“It’s a big honour to be Ryder Cup captain, but it’s not something I want to commit myself to or say too much about it,” McGinley told BBC.
“It’s best if I just step away now and let things evolve. My caddie is a wily, old Scot, and he has a great saying: ‘Whatever’s for you, won’t pass you by.’ So I’ll just stand back and wait until January.”
McGinley, 45, was also vice-captain to Colin Montgomerie in 2010 at Celtic Manor and could have competition for the top job from the Scot as well as Darren Clarke.
In other golf news, Branden Grace stormed further up the world rankings after his fifth title of the season at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, while the top ten remained unchanged.Grace continued his spectacular season on the European Tour, moving up a further eight spots to 37th after started the year at 271.
Ryan Moore was the other big mover, leaping five spots to 39th following his win at the Shriners Hospital for Children Open.
Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy is still on top from Tiger Woods and Englishman Luke Donald.
Lee Westwood, Justin Rose, Adam Scott, Bubba Watson, Webb Simpson, Brandt Snedeker and Jason Dufner round out the top 10 in order.
