GOLFERS Rory McIlroy and Darren Clarke have been nominated for Laureus World Sports Awards.
They join names such as Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi, European athlete of the year Mo Farah and New Zealand’s World Cup-winning rugby team at the awards, which will take place at London’s Central Hall on February 6.
McIlroy, who won the US Open back in June, is up for breakthrough of the year, while 43-year-old Clarke is shortlisted for comeback of the year after capturing the British Open in his first major win.
Laureus world sports academy chairman Edwin Moses said on Press Association:
“This has been a great year for sport and the academy are going to find it extremely difficult to decide who to vote for as winners.
“We have had several massive performances in 2011 both by individuals and teams and that has been reflected in the nominations.”
