RORY McILROY STRENGTHENED his grip on the top spot in the world golf rankings with victory at the Deutsche Bank Championship.
The Northern Irishman trailed by as many as three strokes in the final round at TPC Boston before squeezing past South Africa’s Louis Oosthuizen to win by one shot.
The victory came less than a month after McIlroy claimed the PGA Championship, which saw him reclaim the number one position in the rankings.
“I’m delighted to get my fifth win on the PGA Tour, third win this year, second win in the last three events,” McIlroy said following the tournament.
McIlroy leads the way in the rankings released on Tuesday with 564.08 points, at an average of 11.51 per event.
England’s Luke Donald is second with an average of 9.29 points, closely followed by American Tiger Woods, who finished third at the Deutsche Bank Championship and improved his average to 9.26.
Lee Westwood of England remains fourth with an average of 7.13 points, ahead of America’s Webb Simpson (6.15 points) and Australian Adam Scott (6.15), who moved from ninth to sixth.
Jason Dufner of America (6.09) stays seventh, while countryman Bubba Watson (6.00) dropped from sixth to eighth and Englishman Justin Rose (5.93) slipped one place to ninth.
American Steve Stricker (5.72) rounds out the top 10, with Oosthuizen (5.72) not far behind.
Scotland’s Richie Ramsay, who won the European Tour’s Omega European Masters in Switzerland, is the biggest mover, climbing 42 places to 68th.
