McIlroy settles for second as Mahan win earns rankings boost

The Holywood native lost out to Hunter Mahan in the final of the Accenture World Match Play Championship last night in Arizona.

RORY MCILROY WILL wake up this morning as he did yesterday, the second-best golfer on the planet.

The Holywood native lost out to Hunter Mahan in the final of the Accenture World Match Play Championship last night in Arizona.

The victory means Mahan climbs from 22nd to ninth in the world, his first time in the top 10. Tiger Woods, who lost in the second round to Nick Watney, drops out of the top 20 again,

Lee Westwood, who was defeated by McIlroy in the quarter-finals, remains in third place but he and McIlroy have gained ground on top man, Luke Donald. Graeme McDowell is at 15, Darren Clarke at 56 and three-time major winner Pádraig Harrington is in 83rd spot.
