Midweek mop-up: the best bits from last night's internationals

We sift through the dross so you don’t have to.

MIDWEEK INTERNATIONALS AREN’T everyone’s bag, but they can occasionally produce a few moments of footballing magic.

Here at TheScore, we realise that some of our readers have better things to do than channel-surf on a Tuesday evening, so here are the best bits from last night’s footie.

Game of the night

Anybody who shelled out to go to see Ireland against Uruguay probably got their money’s worth from an entertainment perspective, but the match at the Aviva wasn’t last night’s best game.

That honour goes to the Group E goalfest between Holland and Hungary which finished up 5-3. Robin van Persie had to be substituted at half-time after picking up a knock, but coach Bert van Marwijk doesn’t expect him to be out of action for too long.

As for goals, how about this gem/fluke from Dirk Kuyt to seal the deal?

Goal of the night

The jury is still out as to whether or not Kuyt meant to score the above goal.

While we make our minds up, we’ve decided to press on ahead and award the prestigious honour of goal of the night to Sunderland’s Asamoah Gyan for this late equaliser against England.

Assist of the night

Parma’s Sebastian Giovinco has got the skills to pay the bills as he showed during Italy’s 2-0 friendly win over Ukraine.

Alessandro Matri couldn’t really miss after an assist like that, could he?

Dodgy decision of the night

Fortunately for referee Stephane Lannoy, international friendlies are forgotten about as soon as the final whistle goes.

Otherwise, he might be facing some pretty tough questions after his decision to award Australia a second-half penalty after Harry Kewell took a tumble in the box.

I wonder if Mr Lannoy is still is certain about his decision this morning …

Tweet of the night

Not Jamie Redknapp – he never disappoints, does he?
