The stunning Nickie Quaid flick-save that sent Limerick and Cork's semi-final thriller to extra-time

Limerick and Cork played out a cracking game to complete a brilliant weekend of All-Ireland semi-final action.

LIMERICK GOALKEEPER NICKIE Quaid produced a stunning flick-save in their All-Ireland SHC semi-final against Cork which saved Limerick’s championship and ensured that the game would go to extra-time.

With the teams locked at 1-26 apiece heading into the 72nd minute, Cork went on the attack and had cut through the Limerick cover.

The ball was passed across the penalty area to full-forward Séamus Harnedy, who had the goal at his mercy.

He was lining up to unleash a rocket into the back of the net as the Limerick keeper advanced off his line to prevent the score.

Harnedy tried to sidestep away from the challenge and looked to be in the clear, but at the last second Quaid managed to flick the ball away using perfect technique and the Limerick defence cleared their lines.

Aaron Gillane and Patrick Horgan traded a point each thereafter as the sides prepared for extra-time proceedings but it was Quaid’s save that was the decisive factor in keeping the sides level at the end of normal time.

The contest went to extra-time with Limerick prevailing thanks to goals from Shane Dowling and Pat Ryan to send the Shannonsiders through to a first All-Ireland final appearance since 2007.

Following the epic semi-final between Galway and Clare on Saturday, this was another compelling watch. Cork led by six points with six minutes of normal time remaining, but Limerick rallied.

There were five goals in all, including a superb effort from Conor Lehane in the 51st minute, crashing the ball into the roof of the net to put Cork five points in front.

Ryan’s extra-time goal was also a fine score. He gathered the ball out on the wing and raced through to lob the sliotar over Nash’s head and into the net to secure Limerick’s place in the All-Ireland final.
