Nigerian international footballer dies in tragic car crash

Olubayo Adefemi was travelling to finalise details of his forthcoming wedding when the accident happened.

TWENTY-FIVE-YEAR-OLD Nigerian footballer Olubayo Adefemi has died following a car crash, Greek police confirmed today.

The defender, who played his club football with Greek side Skoda Xanthi, is reported to have lost control of the car as he headed to Salonika in the northern part of the country.

A report from news agency Reuters has indicated that Adefemi was travelling to finalise details of his forthcoming wedding when the accident happened.

Since leaving Nigeria to pursue his professional career in 2004, Adefemi had spent periods with teams in Israel, Romania and France before moving to Skoda at the beginning of the current season.

He made his senior international debut against Ireland in 2009 and went on to make two further appearances for the national side.

“The Super League and the entire Greek football family would like to express its deepest condolences and sympathy for the family of Olubayo Adefemi who died tragically in a car accident,” league organisers said in a statement on Monday.
