'No sex please, we're Irish' - O'Callaghan reveals rugby team's sex ban strategy

The Munster player believes “abstaining could be the future”.

WHAT’S THE KEY to being a successful rugby team? Astute tactics?  A strict training regime? A Machiavellian desire to succeed?

According to Donncha O’Callaghan, abstaining from sex before matches can make a substantial difference to the players’ performances (on the field).

Speaking to Ray D’Arcy on Today FM, the Munster star said:

“We normally stay away from our partners when we are in the Irish camp and to be fair, we play like dogs with rabies when we go out.

“We are like men possessed and I think it’s not a bad way to go – abstaining could be the future.”

His comments come after Giovanni Trapattoni told reporters he would not be imposing an alcohol or sex ban on the Irish footballers at Euro 2012, saying: “There is space for the family or girlfriend. Drink beer or not drink beer.”

And it is not the first time the issue has arisen in a sporting context. Earlier this year, New Zealand rugby fans rejected attempts at an ‘Abstain for the All Blacks’ campaign during the World Cup.
