IT MAY ONLY be 3 January but there’s no time for a New Year hangover with the inter-county GAA season kicking off today.

In the Bord Na Mona O’Byrne Cup, DCU hammered Longford in the first game in Group C, the students winning 3-13 to 0-11 with Enda Smyth, Conor McGraynor and Evan Keane all raising the green flag for the visitors in Pearse Park.

In Ulster’s Dr. McKenna Cup, Monaghan survived a late Ulster University Jordanstown fightback to record a 0-20 to 2-10 win with the Farney’s full forward line of Daniel McKenna, Brendan McElroy and Christopher McKenna combining for 75% of their scores.

18 more inter-county games take place tomorrow.

The GAA pre-season kicks off this weekend with these 20 games

Not only is he not retiring, Keith Higgins is actually the new Mayo football captain
