Pro12: Derby win a step in the right direction, says Strauss

The hooker knows there is still plenty of work to be done if Leinster are to hit the heights of last season.

LEINSTER HOOKER RICHARDT Strauss says his side still have plenty of improving to do, despite tonight’s 30-21 victory over arch-rivals Munster.

The South African opened the scoring for the RaboDirect Pro12 runners-up with a fourth minute try under the posts, a score which was soon over-hauled by Munster in a thrilling first half.

Leinster though, showed their experience and poise to tighten the screw and secure the victory. Speaking immediately after the game to TG4, Strauss said:

“We’re looking to improve very weekend and that’s a step in the right direction. Obviously, it’s not exactly where we want to be, but at least we’re going in the right direction.”

All week, the province has been dealing with the shadow of last weekend’s 34-6 drubbing at the hands of Connacht and they delivered on mid-week promises to eachother that there would be a massive upturn in performance.

However, as Strauss pointed out, they still have plenty to work on ahead of next weekend’s visit of Exeter in the Heineken Cup.

“I think our defence wasn’t as good as it ought to have been. We gave them loads of momentum and that’s something we’ll have to look at during the week and try and fix.”

About his try, which required a TMO before being awarded by referee Leighton Hodges, Strauss said with a grin: ”I knew I didn’t let the ball fall. So I just hoped it touch the line. You know, you always to to celebrate a bit extra.”
