THE PROFESSOR HOLLYWOOD Memorial Cup was set up in 2014 to help raise awareness that there can be life after cancer and features teams made up of GAA players who have received cancer treatment and who want to show others that you can recover from the disease.
This year, Anthony Daly will manage the St. James’s team while Charlie Redmond will take charge of St. Luke’s with the pair hoping the 2015 event will surpass the €44,300 raised for cancer units by Brian Cody and Mick O’Dwyer’s teams in the inaugural edition last year.
Among those taking part this year when the two sides clash in Parnell Park, Dublin on 8 August are Alan Nestor (Meath), Joe Deane (Cork), John McGrath (Wicklow), Daragh McEvoy (Laois), Derek Shevlin (Louth), Jason Hughes (Monaghan), Aiden Watters (Cavan), Ronan Rocks (Derry), Ronan Hamil (Antrim), Eoin Kearns (Laois) and many others.
All of these players have received treatment for cancer and Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh will be returning this year to commentate on the game.
The legendary broadcaster has said that “every player on the field, they are already winners. They have many honours as sportsmen but their greatest honour is that they have battled courageously against the disease of cancer.”
