County football final glory for Rathnew and St Martin’s

The senior football deciders in Wicklow and Wexford took place this afternoon.

Wicklow SFC final

Rathnew 3-9
Baltinglass 1-14

RATHNEW PRODUCED A sensational late comeback to win the county senior football final played at Aughrim this afternoon.

Trailing by four points with seven minutes remaining, they pegged back Baltinglass thanks to goals from Leighton Glynn (penalty) and James Stafford that helped them chisel out a narrow win.

Glynn’s goal arrived with five minutes remaining before Stafford punched the ball to the net in the 60th minute.

Baltinglass had dominated the opening period with Rory Nolan’s goal helping them lead by 1-9 to 0-5 at the interval.

But Rathnew fought back in the second-half with Theo Smith grabbing an early goal and then they battled to produce a heroic late rally to claim the honours.

Wexford SFC final

St Martin’s 1-8
Fethard 0-5

ST MARTIN’S CLINCHED their first ever Wexford senior football crown with a deserved success against Fethard this afternoon at Wexford Park.

The winners, who included county footballers Ciaran Lyng and Daithi Waters in their ranks, built up a commanding lead at the break after being backed by the wind in the first-half.

They were in front by 1-6 to 0-1 at half-time and held on despite a Fethard resurgence in the second-half.

St Martin’s now advance to play Kildare champions Moorefield in the Leinster championship.
