NHL prospect arrested on drink-driving charge -- wearing a purple Teletubbies costume

Riley Sheahan of the Detroit Red Wings is a big Tinky Winky fan, judging by his arrest report.

RILEY SHEAHAN, THE Detroit Red Wings’ top pick in the 2010 NHL draft, was reportedly wearing a purple Teletubbies costume when he was pulled over on a drink-driving charge in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

A copy of the arrest report obtained by Michigan news website MLive.com showed that a breathalyzer test indicated the 20-year-old Canadian had a blood-alcohol content of .30 when he was stopped for driving the wrong way on 29 October.

That’s almost four times the legal limit and two times the threshold to be charged under Michigan’s “super-drunk” law, which carries stiffer penalties than an ordinary drink-driving charge.

MLive reported that Sheahan was also carrying the identification of Brendan Smith, another Detroit prospect who is expected to join the team when the NHL lockout ends.

According to the police report obtained by the website, Sheahan was also charged with providing police with false information.

Sheahan pleaded not guilty at his arraignment on 6 November. If convicted, he faces up to 180 days in jail.

The purple costume on the Teletubbies’ children programme belongs to Tinky Winky.
