Rory McIlroy the clubhouse leader after second round of 63 in Abu Dhabi
RORY MCILROY IS the clubhouse leader at the second round of the Abu Dhabi Championship after a brilliant nine-under 63.
McIlroy was given a two-shot penalty at the end of his opening round on Thursday. He had originally shot a round of 68 after notching three birdies in the last five holes, but that was increased to 70, as his double-bogey on the 12th was changed to a quadruple-bogey.
The Masters champion bounced back in style with a terrific round on Friday that featured 11 birdies, as his approach game set up a succession of birdie chances.
He bogeyed the first hole but fought back with four birdies on his front nine to reach the turn in 33. McIlroy’s blistering run continued with four consecutive birdies between the 10th and 13th holes.
McIlroy missed a three-footer for par with bogey on the 14th, yet he responded with a birdie on 15, and finished in style with an eight-foot birdie putt on the 17th, and he tapped in with a two-foot putt for a birdie on the par-five 18th.
He currently shares the lead with Tyrrell Hatton and Jon Rahm on 11-under, both of those players still playing their second rounds.
Elsewhere on the PGA Tour, Seamus Power had a round of three-under 69 in the first round of the WWT Championship. He is six shots off the lead held by Chris Kirk.
