Rovers player denies racially abusing Zayed

Shamrock Rovers pledge to co-operate with FAI investigation in an attempt to clear their player’s name.

THE UNNAMED SHAMROCK ROVERS player alleged to have racially abused Derry City striker Eamon Zayed has denied the claims, according to a statement issued by the Tallaght club last night.

The Dublin-born Libyan international lodged an official complaint with the match observer following Monday’s 1-1 draw at Tallaght Stadium, with the PFAI confirming that Zayed had accused one of his opponents of making racist remarks.

The FAI announced yesterday that its Disciplinary Control Unit would be investigating the allegations, with the league champions pledging their support and co-operation as they seek to clear their player’s name.

“The club has spoken to the player in question and he completely rejects the accusation that has been made against him,” Shamrock Rovers said last night.

“The club will, of course, co-operate with the FAI investigation in a bid to clear the name of the player involved and the club. We also regret that our name was publicly associated with such claims on the basis of an accusation and without any investigation taking place.”

Garrett Mullan, coordinator for Show Racism the Red Card, last night reiterated the importance of both players and supporters taking a proactive stance against racism in the domestic game.

The FAI have a track record of investigating incidents and of implementing measures in response to racism. There are penalties in place arising out of incidents where racism is a feature. It is important that players, supporters and all involved in the game feel confident in reporting racism where they see it or experience it and we will await the outcome of this investigation.
