YESTERDAY AFTERNOON, SOME Irish football fans tuned into RTÉ Player to watch the highly anticipated fixture between Ireland and Sweden… only to be greeted with this:
Just as the match build-up was getting underway, RTÉ Player started broadcasting clips from the 1993 comedy Cool Runnings at random intervals.
No, really.
THAT’S NOT WES HOOLAHAN!
This is not the time for a film about plucky Jamaican underdogs, RTÉ!
Seriously.
The glitch appears to have stemmed from the fact that Cool Runnings was being broadcast on RTÉ Player International at the same time the match was airing. (RTÉ’s rights for all matches are restricted to the Republic of Ireland only.)
Note to RTÉ Player: try not to broadcast The Mighty Ducks during Ireland v. Belgium, yeah?
