Heartbreak for Ireland's Sanita Puspure with fourth-place finish

The Cork-based athlete ‘ran out of water’.

SANITA PUSPURE’S OLYMPIC medal hopes are over.

The Cork-based rower powered through the last metres of her rowing quarter-final in Rio this afternoon but could not overhaul the three race leaders, who now progress.

Her fourth-placed finish means she’ll now race in the C and D semi-finals but a podium finish is now beyond her.

The Latvia-born athlete started well and led for a time but soon found herself behind the leading pack and could not reel them in again despite that massive effort.

Olympic champion Kim Brennan won the race with Belarus and China also progressing.
