IRELAND’S SARAH HEALY completed the second leg of a glorious long-distance double at the U18 European Championships this evening, again dominating the field to win 1,500 metres gold by some distance.
After claiming 3,000m gold on Friday, Healy showed all her class again to move through the gears, pull away from her nearest competitors and coast to victory in another championship record of 4:18.71.
The Hold Child Killiney student’s latest record-breaking feat caps a brilliant week for Ireland, who finish with four medals, three of which were gold after the track success of Healy, Rhasidat Adeleke and Sophie O’Sullivan.
Speaking afterwards, Healy said her plan was to sit in the pack before kicking on after the first lap.
“Yeah definitely I decided to take it on, well just to go to the front after the first lap because I thought I’d stay out of trouble and speed it up and take the kick out of other people’s legs,” she said.
“I just want to say thanks to my Mum and Dad, and my coach because I definitely couldn’t have done it without them.”
