Thin on the ground

Scarlets have to 'think outside the box' to ease scrum-half crisis in South Africa

The Welsh side have signed Herschel Jantjies for just one match.

SCARLETS’ INJURY PROBLEMS have developed into a full-blown crisis on their tour of South Africa with the reigning Pro12 champions forced to bring Herschel Jantjies in as cover for Saturday’s game against the Cheetahs.

With Gareth and Aled Davies both on international duty with Wales, Jonathan Evans injured during their victory over the Southern Kings last weekend and Declan Smith also sidelined, Wayne Pivac’s resources at scrum-half are thin on the ground.

The Welsh region had last week called on Mike Phillips to come out of retirement to provide cover for the tour of South Africa, and now Pivac has had to dip into the market to bring in further back-up.

Jantjies, the Stormers scrum-half, has been signed on a short-term loan deal and will only be available for the Pro14 clash against the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein.

“We’ve had to be creative and think outside the box with our halfbacks on this tour,” Pivac said.
