Reuters and Madrid-based newspaper AS report say that his neurological condition has worsened considerably.
The family of the Ryder Cup legend said they will release further news about his health as it occurs.
The five-times major winner had surgery on a brain tumour in late 2008 followed by a course of chemotherapy and had been recuperating at his home in northern Spain.
