Lowry carded six birdies as he backed up rounds of 67 and 62 with another hugely satisfying day in Co Clare, as he seeks to add a second Irish Open to the one he won as an amateur in 2009.

Tom McKibbin, from Co Down, is in a tie for fourth place on seven-under following his 68 today.

Rory McIlroy had a frustrating day, shooting a 74 as his challenge failed to ignite. The Northern Irishman’s round included three bogeys and two double bogeys.
