Sligo appoint Ian Baraclough as manager

The former Scunthorpe United manager has been appointed as Paul Cook’s replacement.

SLIGO ROVERS HAVE appointed Ian Baraclough as the club’s new manager.

The 41-year-old joins the Bit O’Red following a short spell in charge of Scunthorpe United in the Championship last season.

In a statement released this evening, Sligo said that Baraclough was unanimously approved by the club’s interview board as the “outstanding candidate” to replace Paul Cook, who left to join Accrington Stanley earlier this month.

“The club has had a magnificent four or five years and moved to a very high level, one that I want to continue,” Baraclough assured Sligo fans on his appointment. “It’ll be a tough job to carry it on but I’m determined to do it.

“Timescales are not helping in terms of the league starting but there is nothing that can be done about that now and I just want to get down to work with the group of players.”

Baraclough’s only managerial experience to date is a brief stint with Scunthorpe, where he took over in September 2010 following the departure of Nigel Adkins for Southampton.

He was sacked six months later in March 2011 after a string of disappointing results saw the Iron drop into the relegation zone. Scunthorpe went on to finish bottom of the Championship on goal difference under Baraclough’s replacement Alan Knill and were relegated to League One.

Baraclough finished his playing career with Scunthorpe and moved into a coaching role at the club before he was appointed as manager.

As a player, he made over 550 league appearances, most notably with QPR and in two spells with Notts County.
