South African Olympian Stander killed in road accident
CHAMPION MOUNTAIN BIKER Burry Stander died on Thursday after being run over by a minibus in a road accident, representatives said.
In a statement on his professional Facebook page sponsors said Stander had been hit while training on the KwaZulu-Natal coast.
“We are truly saddened to have to confirm that Burry Stander has passed away,” the statement read.
25-year-old Stander was UCI Mountain Bike World Cup under-23 men’s cross-country 2009 world champion and had finished fifth at the London Olympics.
Bicycling SA described him as a “true mountain biking legend.”
Local media reported that he was killed by a minibus taxi in a hit-and-run incident.
