FIRST DIVISION FAVOURITES Shelbourne suffered their first defeat of the season as Athlone Town stormed to a 3-1 win at Tolka Park.

Garbhan Coughlan and Eric Foley set the visitors on their way and after Gareth Coughlan have Shels hopes of rescuing a point in the closing stages, Daniel Purdy sealed the win for the Town in stoppage time.

UCD, meanwhile, have now lost three of their opening four games of the SSE Airtricity League First Division season as The Students suffered a 1-0 loss at Wexford Youths on Friday night.

After being relegation from the top-flight last year, there were wholesale changes at the Belfield Bowl during the off-season and Collie O’Neill’s side have endured a stuttering start to the campaign.

Danny Furlong’s first minute goal was enough to separate the sides at Ferrycarrig Park.

Elsewhere, Cabinteely picked up three points with a 1-0 win over Waterford United and Finn Harps joined Athlone at the summit following a 2-0 victory over Cobh Ramblers.
