Roddy returns to the dugout but he can't prevent Athlone losing at Shels

Waterford remain top of the First Division, while second-placed Cobh Ramblers also had a win this evening.

THE PRESENCE OF Roddy Collins wasn’t enough to stop Athlone Town losing out 2-1 to Shelbourne tonight.

It was confirmed yesterday that the experienced manager was taking over at the Midlands club for a second time, and although Collins wasn’t expected to officially take charge at Tolka Park he came down from the stands to sit in the dugout.

Defender Derek Prendergast put the home side in front on 58 minutes and Jack Tuite doubled Shels’ advantage shortly afterwards. Athlone halved the deficit through Jason Lyons on 79 minutes but it was Owen Heary’s side who won out.

Waterford remain top of the First Division table thanks to a second-half winner from Derek Daly in the south-east derby with Wexford, while Cobh Ramblers are second after a 2-0 victory at home to Cabinteely.

Matthew Whelan put them ahead in the fist half before Stephen Christopher added second on 58 minutes at St Colman’s Park.

Longford Town and UCD meet at City Calling Stadium tomorrow [7.30pm kick-off].

  • Shelbourne 2-1 Athlone Town
  • Cobh Ramblers 2-0 Cabinteely
  • Wexford 0-1 Waterford
