Steven Defour smashes ball at Standard Liege fans & gets sent-off

Anderlecht midfielder made his name with Standard & captained them to numerous successes.

STEVEN DEFOUR SPENT five years with Standard Liege. He captained the side and led them to back-to-back league titles in 2008 and 2009.

But, he left the club in 2011 and moved to FC Porto where he spent three seasons.

The 26 year-old decided to return to Belgium last summer though and signed with the country’s biggest club, Anderlecht.

Unsurprisingly, the move didn’t exactly go down well with his former team and Standard fans waited patiently for Defour’s return to the city.

Earlier today, they finally got the opportunity to tell the midfielder exactly what they thought of him turning out for a rival team.

After a scoreless first-half, things got out of hand shortly after the restart. A Standard player was on the ground following an altercation and the ball reached Defour, who had already been booked.

He decided to put the ball out of play and thumped it directly at the home supporters.

The referee had no hesitation in brandishing a second yellow and despite Defour’s protestations, he was off.

There followed a heated few minutes as visiting fans began throwing various missiles from the stands and some of the Anderlecht players appealed for calm.

The red card proved the turning point of the game. Ten minutes later, Laurent Ciman scored Standard’s opener while Igor de Camargo ensured the three points for the home side by adding a second on 87 minutes.
