AFTER ENJOYING A training camp in the Mediterranean climate of Tenerife, Newcastle manager Alan Pardew’s return to the north-east of England this weekend has been made that bit sunnier.

3,500 miles away, his top goalscorer and new signing were last night unable to save the hotly-tipped Senegal from a second consecutive defeat, meaning a place in the knockout stages is now beyond them.

Demba Ba and Papiss Demba Cisse will return to Tyneside earlier than had been expected but Pardew is busy at work attempting to add another talented attacking player to his squad.

Elijero Elia won Eredivisie Player of the Year as part of the impressive FC Twente side in 2009, which earned him a move to Hamburg that summer.

Two seasons in the Bundesliga saw the winger catch the eye of Juventus and the 24-year-old moved to Turin back in August.

While undoubtedly talented, Elia has flattered to deceive at times this season and, as he is unable to hold down a regular starting place, might fancy a switch to the club lying sixth in the Premier League.

Liverpool will make their first appearance in the new Wembley Stadium (ok, it’s five years old) on Sunday February 26 when they face Cardiff City in the Carling Cup final and if a proposed move for former Arsenal player Alexander Hleb goes to plan, he could potentially be involved, having missed out when his Birmingham team beat the Gunners last year.

The Belarusian international is having a torrid time on loan at Wolfsburg and they want to terminate his six-month contract. QPR are also lining up an offer for the 30-year-old.

A host of Premier League clubs have sent scouts to monitor the progress of Sporting Lisbon playmaker Adrian Silva. The Portuguese U21 star is valued at €6m by the club who produced players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Nani and Joao Moutinho. Sunderland, Swansea and Blackburn all fancy their chances of agreeing a deal.

Another young player based in Portugal’s Primeira Liga who appears to have a huge future in the game is Juan Iturbe.

At 18, the creative midfielder only joined FC Porto from Cerro Porteno in Paraguay last summer but his father and agent is looking to get him some first-team football and Bolton Wanderers will offer the chance of gaining experience in England.

Vasco da Gama might struggle to keep hold of defender Dede if reports that Alex Ferguson is a big fan are to be believed. With injury concerns hanging over Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, the centre-half with a keen eye for a goal is said to be on Manchester United’s wishlist.
