Ireland win the Carling Nations Cup, Tipp see off the Rebels, and Luke Donald is on top of the world.

1. #NATIONS CUP The Republic of Ireland international football team won their first international silverware in 25 years last night, beating Scotland 1-0 in the Aviva Stadium to claim the Carling Nations Cup.

2. #PREMIER POWER All-Ireland Hurling Champions Tipperary booked a semi-final date against Clare after they weathered a second-half comeback by Cork to record a 3-22 to 0-23 victory in Semple Stadium.

In Ruislip, the Mayo footballers were very nearly on the end of a nasty shock, needing extra-time to see off London.

3. #TOP OF THE WORLD Luke Donald is golf’s new world number one following his playoff victory over Lee Westwood at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth yesterday.

Donald becomes only the third Briton to top the world rankings, with Westwood and Faldo the other two players to have achieved the feat since the system was introduced in 1986.

4. #POLITICAL FOOTBALL The FIFA corruption saga took another turn yesterday as both Mohamed Bin Hammam and Jack Warner were suspended pending a full investigation by the association’s ethics committee.

President Sepp Blatter, however, was cleared of any wrongdoing by the sport’s global governing body.

5. #WINNING Lithuanian Gediminas Bagdonas (An Post Sean Kelly) has won the 2011 An Post Rás, hanging on to the yellow jersey as the eight-day stage race finished in Skerries yesterday.

Sean Downey (Ireland Team Skoda) finished as the top Irish rider in 11th place.

6. #MAGNIFICENT MESSI He’s only gone and scored 53 goals in 55 games for Barcelona this season. Put the feet up and enjoy this compilation of the lot.
