Every morning brings you the stories you need to know before that first cup of coffee.

1. #TRUE BLUE Dublin GAA delegates last night ratified Jim Gavin as their new senior football boss.

Twice an All-Ireland winning manager with the Dublin U-21s, Gavin has been the front-runner to take over in the capital since Pat Gilroy announced his decision to step down last month.

Also, as expected, Anthony Daly will remain on as the hurling chief for another season.

2. #HOMECOMING Kilkenny’s hurling public welcomed home the Liam MacCarthy cup for the 34th time on Noreside last night. Here’s how it looked. In Galway meanwhile, some 5,000 supporters filed into Pearse Stadium to laud their hurlers’ efforts.

The Connacht champions’ goalkeeper James Skehill told reporters yesterday that he failed a fitness miserably in his own mind before the game and was in excruciating pain throughout his first half appearance at Croke Park.

3. #AIRTRICITY LEAGUE St Pat’s remain in second, five points behind title-chasing Sligo, after a 5-0 rout of UCD in Inchicore last night. Drogheda too kept up their part of the bargain, staying in third, after a 2-1 win over Shels at home.

4. #PREMIER LEAGUE West Ham piled more misery on a hapless QPR with a 2-1 win at Loftus Road last night.

5. #CHAMPIONS LEAGUE It’s another intriguing night of European action tonight. Celtic face Aiden McGeady’s Spartak Moscow in the earlier kick-off before Chelsea face Nordsjaelland, Benfica take on Barcelona and Manchester United kick off away to Cluj. We’ll liveblog the action throughout.

6. #NFL Chicago defenders Charles Tillman and Lance Briggs returned interceptions of Tony Romo passes for touchdowns to spur the Bears past Dallas 34-18 in a National Football League game last night.

James Skehill: ‘Some might say I was a hindrance but some might say it was a positive me starting’
