RAIN STOPPED PLAY at the US Open on Tuesday with French 11th seed Marion Bartoli leading Russian third seed Maria Sharapova 4-0 in their women’s quarter-final at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
A men’s fourth-round match between Spanish fourth seed David Ferrer and French 13th seed Richard Gasquet was halted with Ferrer leading 7-5, 7-6 (7/2), 4-3.
It was the third rain stoppage of the day. Showers earlier hit women’s top seed Victoria Azarenka’s victory over Australian defending champion Samantha Stosur and again to delay the Bartoli-Sharapova start.
With more rain expected for the next few hours, officials decided to delay the conclusion of the Sharapova-Bartoli match, allowing for the start of Andy Roddick’s men’s fourth-round match against Argentina’s Juan Martin Del Potro to start when dry conditions return.
