ROBBIE KEANE HAS had plenty of important weeks on the football pitch but few which were as enjoyable — or as hectic — as the one which has just passed.

After helping Ireland seal qualification for Euro 2012 on Tuesday, Keane kept the champagne on ice for a few days and jetted back to Los Angeles for last night’s MLS Cup final.

And while the Dubliner didn’t get his name on the scoresheet, he was at the heart of the move which saw the LA Galaxy beat the Houston Dynamo 1-0 and seal the franchise’s third cup win.

Landon Donovan was the hero of the evening, skipping free to dink the ball over Houston keeper Tally Hall in the 72nd minute.

But it was the local boy’s international team-mates who combined to set him free, David Beckham rising to flick a header onto Keane who beat his man before sliding a neat through-ball into Donovan’s path.

It was a fitting contribution for Beckham in what many believe to be his last game for the Galaxy after five years of service.

For Keane though, this is just the beginning.

“That’s why I came here, to win things,” Keane told MLSSoccer’s Jackie Pickering afterwards.

“They made it hard for us. We dominated the game to be honest with you but we just didn’t get through.”

I just dropped off and I saw Landon running through. It was sort of a reverse pass to him and Landon did the rest, it was a great finish. From then on, we knew we were going to win.

“It’s been a very tough few weeks for me — six games in two-and-a-half weeks. I’m a little bit tired now, but it was worth it to win the championship.”
