Wicklow appoint Murphy to succeed O'Dwyer

The county board have finally appointed a new man following the end of Mick O’Dwyer’s reign in charge.

THE WICKLOW COUNTY board have appointed Harry Murphy to take over as manager, their official website has confirmed.

The appointment follows the decision of veteran coach Mick O’Dwyer to step down last month after five years in charge of the team, when his team exited at the Round 2 qualifying stage of the All-Ireland against Armagh.

Murphy previously enjoyed a successful spell in charge of Rathnew, having guided the side to a Leinster Club Championship, in addition to 7 Senior Football titles during his 11-year tenure.

Kiltegan’s Gavin Wynne and Bray’s Mick Murray will serve as Murphy’s assistants.

Despite high hopes, Wicklow disappointed during O’Dwyer’s reign, with the legendary Kerryman unable to bring success to the c0unty.

Murphy will be hoping to restore a similar level of confidence to that which he instilled into his Rathnew side and in particular, between 2000 and 2003, when they won 4 Senior Football titles in a row.
