Yes, Alex McLeish did just compare Emile Heskey to Franz Beckenbauer

The Villa boss appears to have fallen into some sort of alternate reality.

EMILE WILLIAM IVANHOE HESKEY has been compared to many things over the course of his career. Now he can add German legend Franz Beckenbauer to the list.

The big striker received the unlikely tribute from Aston Villa boss Alex McLeish who has been experimenting with him as a utility player over the recent international break.

Heskey started Villa’s first four games of the season in attack but has since found himself squeezed out of the starting XI, leading McLeish to ponder a change in his role.

“We now know what Emile can do, he can play in any position,’’ McLeish told the Birmingham Mail. “I could even play him at the back without any fears.”

We played him at centre-back last week and he was spraying the ball about the whole pitch as if I was watching Franz Beckenbauer.

At the time of publication, “Der Kaiser” had yet to publicly comment on the comparison.
