YouTube Top 10: because Tom Watson shows the kids how to do it

The grand old golfing master shows up ‘Poults’ and ‘GMac’ while Novak Djokvic practices his backhand for Stallone’s new movie.

10. Tom Watson has been around the golfing block for decades so it was perhaps unwise of Ian Poulter to invite him along for a ‘closest to the pin challenge’ at The Players Championship in Sawgrass.

The winner of eight majors, the last one in 1983, joined Camilo Villegas, Graeme McDowell and Poulter at the tee-box on the imposing 17th hole. The 132-yard island green lay in the distance and ‘Poults’ sets the marker but Tom was not going to be beaten by a kid.

9. Novak Djokovic said this week that you would have to be Chuck Norris to handle the blue clay at the Madrid Masters. Whether the Serbian was name-dropping Norris because of his perennial agility or he saw Chuck land some baseline boomers on the set of Expendables Part 2, who knows. Still, it is enough reason to look at Djokovic stunt-thwacking goons in his cameo role.

8. That Falcao bloke ain’t a bad player. The Colombian was in fantastic form in the semi-finals of the Europa League and went one better on Wednesday night when he netted twice. His second goal was all down to quick-thinking in the box but we prefer his opening effort. Great poise and power.

7. Steve Smith may be a dogged batter and an ordinary Test-match spinner but the Australian loves the shorter format of the cricket game. He showed off his fielding skills again this week when he pulled off a stunning leap to deny Kolkata Knight Riders a certain six.

6. You can never please everybody, not even when the Olympics come to town. Greenwich Park in London is being used this summer as the staging grounds for the equestrian section of the games.

Some residents did not take kindly to the arrival of Olympic hopefuls after they were invited along to get a feel for the course. “Many local residents will be deprieved of the park every day will be deprieved of their only breathing space, when the park is closed for a WHOLE month during the summer school holidays,” said one angry soul.

5. FC Köln fans were not best pleased on Saturday last when their club was relegated from the Bundesliga after losing to Bayern Munich. That minority – the ones that ruin everything – decided that the best way to show their unhappiness was to set the ground alight. The riot police were not happy about it at all and waded in.

4. Fans are not the only ones that can get angry. Check out this great collection of top-blowing moments in North American sport. The best of all 10 clips must surely be the unfortunate yet idiotic fan that decides to tackle a bench full of Buffalo Sabres hockey players. Try to count the amount of unanswered punches he endures.

3. What better way to chew up some time before a big Indy Car race than to hit the golf course with one of its old stagers, Dale Jarrett. It might sound like a junket for the Fox television crew but Jarrett, a three-time Daytona 500 winner, has an amazing sporting back-story.

The American was a baseball and basketball star in high school and, as a scratch golfer, turned down scholarship in the University of South Carolina to pursue a high-octane career. Check out the great Kenny Loggins Caddyshack music too.

2. Vladimir Putin may be many things (bear hunter, martial arts lover, President of Russia) but he this sporting moment may be the pinnacle of his eventful life. He had the chance to win the game for his amateur side when they did battle with a team made up of former ice hockey legends. He did not disappoint, albeit in slow motion.

1. Simon Danielli was forced to retire from competitive rugby this week after succumbing to persistent injuries. The Scottish international was a solid, if not spectacular, player for Ulster (as the clip shows). He will put aside his personal heartache, no doubt, to cheer his colleagues on in the Heineken Cup Final on 19 May.
