Chelsea splash out €27m on former Bolton defender as transfer deadline nears

David Luiz is also believed to be undergoing a medical at Stamford Bridge.

ANTONIO CONTE’S CHELSEA have confirmed the signing of Spanish defender Marcos Alonso for a fee in the region of £23m (€27m).

And it looks like club chairman Roman Abramovich’s day is going to be a costly one with Brazilian defender David Luiz is expected to re-join the club later this evening.

Former Bolton Wanderers and Sunderland left-back Alonso had been linked with a move to Chelsea late in the transfer window, though the Italian club denied such reports on Monday.

However, Fiorentina confirmed today the sale of the 25-year-old defender to the Premier League team and Chelsea have also announced the deal at their end.

“Fiorentina announces that it has sold, outright, the rights to the player Marcos Alonso Mendoza to Chelsea,” an official club statement said.

It is understood that Luiz is in London undergoing a medical ahead of a proposed £34m (€40m) move back to Stamford Bridge from Paris St-Germain. Luiz left Chelsea for PSG in a deal worth £50m two years ago.

The transfer window closes at 11.30pm tonight.
