In the mix! Strong start for Ireland's Leona Maguire at the Women's Open

The Cavan native carded three-under in the opening round, while Olivia Mehaffey is also in action at Kingsbarns.

IRELAND’S LEONA MAGUIRE has made a good start at the British Open, and is well in the mix and towards the top of the leaderboard after round one.

The amateur world number one carded three-under par in the opening round. A birdie on the last hole left her on 69, five behind leader Michelle Wie of America.

22-year-old Cavan native Maguire currently sits in 15th position. She hit five birdies in total, two bogeys — on the 14th and 16th — and struck par on every other hole.

This comes after she won the one of the biggest tournaments in amateur golf – the British Ladies Amateur Golf Championship – in June.

Ireland’s other representative Olivia Mehaffey is one-under after nine holes at Kingsbarns.
