London calling... again

Even the NFL doesn't know all the teams set to play in London next year

One of the six won’t be decided until the end of this season.

THERE’S A REAL chance the Washington football team play two games in London in as many weeks next year after the NFL announced the 2016 International Series fixtures.

While only five of the six teams involved were named today, the sixth will likely be whatever team finishes third in the NFC East, a position Washington could well occupy by the end of the season.

We do know, however, that they will definitely play the Cincinnati Bengals on 30 October, the third of three dates across two different stadiums in London.

While that encounter, as well as the AFC South divisional clash between the Jacksonville Jaguars and Indianapolis Colts (2 October), will take place in Wembley stadium, the first ever NFL game at Twickenham Stadium will kick off on 23 October.

The (for now, at least) St. Louis Rams will face the aforementioned third placed team in the NFC East — which could also be the Dallas Cowboys, Philadelphia Eagles or New York Giants — assuming the Rams remain in third place in the NFC West themselves.

Speaking after the announcement, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said:

“The passion our UK fans have shown for the NFL is overwhelming. We are very appreciative of the strong and growing fan support, not only for the games, but for all of the related NFL events we host in the UK throughout the year.

“We look forward to welcoming new fans to their first NFL game in 2016 and welcoming back thousands of others that are helping our sport grow to new levels of popularity in London and beyond.”

The game times and a possible additional International Series game outside of the UK — with Germany and Mexico the front-runners — will be announced at a later date.
