NIGEL OWENS IS as famous for his comedic talents as he is for his refereeing decisions, and the Welshman was at his chirpy best last night as he took charge of a rather dull Champions Cup clash between Racing 92 and Northampton.
The sides shared the spoils in a 9-9 draw, but Owens appeared to be entertaining himself throughout as he joked freely and then admonished one of the Northampton players for using bad language.
It’s not the first time Owens has told a player off for swearing close to his mic, with Dan Carter on the receiving end during the World Cup.
Away from the comedy, Owen’s refereeing performance was criticised by several French journalists and supporters, who felt that Racing out-half Carter should have received more protection from the match official as he found himself on the end of some thumping Northampton tackles just after he had passed or kicked the ball.
