Benildus prevail in another thrilling battle to seal spot in Leinster final

Andrew Fox’s fisted goal was crucial as the Stillorgan school advanced to a showdown with Marist College.

ANDREW FOX WAS the hero for St Benildus College as the Dublin school booked their spot in the Leinster Colleges ‘A’ final with a thrilling extra-time win against Scoil Mhuire Clane in Newbridge today.

St Benildus prevailed by 1-12 to 0-13 at St Conleth’s Park and Fox’s goal in the second half of extra time proved to be the decisive score.

The sides couldn’t be separated in normal and extra time in Darver last weekend and today’s encounter continued in the same vein.

Clane led by 0-6 to 0-4 at half-time and the Kildare school looked to have done enough to book their spot in the provincial final as they led by one point with only seconds remaining. But Benildus’ Dan O’Brien steered a monstrous free through the posts to tie things up at 10 points apiece with the last kick of normal time.

So, extra time was called for again. Clane took the lead through a Ciarán Kelly free while the Dublin school started to hit some sloppy wides.

But Fox fisted to the net after getting on the end of an O’Brien delivery to snatch the Stillorgan school a lead they would never relinquish.

St Benildus College will face Marist College in the final after the Athlone school saw off Good Counsel, New Ross last weekend.
