RISING IRISH TENNIS star Simon Carr bagged his first win at a Grand Slam juniors event this afternoon, showing great resolve in a comeback victory against Vasil Kirkov of the United States.
Carr, the son of former Dublin Gaelic football manager Tommy, lost the first set 6-0 to Kirkov, who is 30th in the world junior rankings, 33 places ahead of the Westmeath native.
However, Carr responded excellently after his disappointing start to the first-round tie, the 17-year-old winning the second set on a tie-break (7-4), before clinching the match 6-2 in the third set.
Carr, who made his boys’ singles Grand Slam bow in Australia earlier this year, advances to play Zsombor Piros from Hungary in the second round after the fourth seed overcame France’s Maxence Broville 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.
